Safety Outcomes

Implementing a culture of safety generates positive physical outcomes for patients and staff and also results in long term financial benefits for the Operator. The right set of safety solutions can help mitigate injury risk and reduce pressure ulcer incidence while fostering an environment that encourages comfort and rehabilitation. Our Safety solutions are created with hands-on discovery and assessment of your environment to ensure your unique challenges and goals are captured for integration into your program.

Reduce Staff Injuries – Five Star Quality Care studied data from two years prior to implementing the Joerns Safety Solution to two years after the program began. Over the long term, their data indicated a reduction in the incidence of injuries of 44% and a drop in severity of 32%. This customer sited the importance of product use and good body mechanics training up front and ongoing.1 Education and training are a fundamental component of Safety Solutions.

Reduce the Risk of Falls – Based on a laboratory study, Joerns reported that residents have a 51% chance of falling from a 35" wide surface. While this is a standard healthcare bed width, Joerns offers an optional kit that expands the bed surface to nearly 42", reducing the fall risk by 36%.2

Reduce Staff Injuries – A safe patient handling pilot study with Radius Mayflower reported the elimination of patient handling injuries and lost workdays. Lost workday claims dropped from 236 pre-case to 0 post-case.3 The Joerns team helped the pilot unit overcome obstacles and design a program that produced the results - elimination of injuries.

Increase Staff Retention – Staff satisfaction is a key driver to retention and is a complex measurement. Radius Mayflower conducted a pre- and post- implementation survey and highlighted the following improvements with respect to agreeing with the following statements. "I enjoy coming to work" – 47.4% increase, "Morale is better today than it was a year ago" – 51.6% increase, and "Supervisors in my workgroup are concerned with my safety" – 35.9% increase.3 Joerns involved a cross-functional facility team in program development and implementation. Staff that are involved in culture change will be more apt to view it as a positive event and feel valued as a team member.

Improve Patient Rehabilitation – Caregivers for a paraplegic patient, who suffered a significant spinal cord injury as well as a shattered left femur, introduced the Hoyer Journey into the rehabilitation care plan. After using the stand-up lift as a gait training tool, the patient extended his ability to stand with improved posture for a maximum of 20 seconds to a total of 10 minutes at a time with no safety concerns to the patient and staff.4 Joerns Healthcare’s Clinical Solutions Specialist recommended this solution as a stand assist modality and gait training tool.
